Overview of the Open Water Course

Even in confined water, the experience of diving is exciting, because you feel new sensations. This is because the underwater world differs in several ways from the terrestrial world to which you’re accustomed. We’ll look at:

  • How water creates pressure and how you adjust for it.
  • Why and how you can float, sink or be almost weightless in water.
  • How seeing, hearing and moving differ in water.
  • Why water absorbs heat and how you stay warm.

Each of these directly affects your safety and enjoyment as a diver.

The six topics in Being a Diver I Are:

1. Water Pressure and Air Volume Effects

2. The Effects of Increasing Pressure on Body Air Spaces
3. The Effects of Decreasing Pressure on Body Air Spaces
4. Breathing Underwater
5. Buoyancy and Controlling Buoyancy
6. The Buddy System
