Lesson eight: Mask Removal and Replacement, and No-Mask Breathing

Course Complete

It doesn’t happen often, but your mask can flood completely, or come off entirely. You’ll learn how to clear out the water, then to remove it, put it back on and clear it.

no mask
  • Clear a fully flooded mask just as you do a partially flooded one; you just exhale a little longer.
  • After removing your mask, keep your eyes open if you’re not wearing contact lenses. Everything will be blurry, but you will be able to see well enough to swim and signal your buddy.
  • Block your nose if it makes you more comfortable at first, but practice until you don’t need to.
  • You’ll practice breathing without a mask for a minute or more (which is about how long it would take to reach the surface if you lost your mask and couldn’t find it) then replace and clear it.
