Lesson 65
Your instructor may have you practice exiting the water by climbing a ladder.
This is a technique commonly used when diving from dive boats.
- Stay out from under divers ahead of you in case they were to fall back in, or have a cylinder slip loose.
- If there’s a current, you usually have a line to hold while waiting to exit.
- Keep all your gear in place and enough air in your BCD to float comfortably.
- Breathe from your snorkel while waiting to exit (your regulator is fine if you have a lot of air left).
- Hand up accessories before exiting.
- Hand up your fins, or put them on your wrist.
- Switch back to your regulator before exiting.
- Breathe from your regulator and keep your mask on until you’re all the way aboard.
- Depending upon the ladder, the conditions and your physical characteristics, you may hand up your weights, or your entire scuba kit, before climbing the ladder.
- Some divers cannot use a ladder at all due to physical characteristics and use a different exit technique.
