How to Defog Your Mask

Course Complete

If you don’t defog your mask, it will usually fog up during the dive. Most divers have their own “recipes,” though your best bet is to follow the directions on the defog product you purchased from the dive center.

That being said, here are a couple of tips on preparing a brand new mask for diving from me.

When you purchase a brand new mask I always recommend giving it the tooth paste treatment. Because a new mask may have a thin film of silicone residue on the glass of your mask from manufacturing, if this silicone residue is not removed your mask will always fog up no matter how many defog drops you put in your mask.

The Tooth Paste Treatment

Take your new mask and put a small blob of toothpaste (use regular toothpaste not gel) on both lens and spread it around, then take a medium bristle toothbrush and vigorously scrub the lens  for a minute or two, when done rinse all the toothpaste out of your mask, and it's good to go.

Now, on every dive follow the defog instructions below.
