Lesson 106
We will discuss how to stay in the game - The diving game that is!
By the end of this section, I should be able to answer these questions:
1. How do I keep my dive skills and knowledge current and refreshed?
2. How do I refresh my dive skills and knowledge after a period of inactivity? As a new PADI Open Water Diver, after what interval of inactivity is this recommended?
3. How does continuing my diver training help keep my skills refreshed?
Staying Current and Active as a Diver
Like any specialized set of skills and knowledge, your dive skills and knowledge stay sharp if you use them often. But you start to lose them if you go an extended period without diving. The best way to keep your knowledge and skills current and refreshed is to use them – dive regularly. If you can’t get to open water, scuba dive in a pool with a buddy to keep your skills sharp. The PADI Skill Practice and Dive Planning Slate is useful for this, as it lists the water skills you learn in the PADI Open Water Diver course, and prompts you to self-assess whether you’re comfortable with each skill, or want more practice.
Besides going diving, involve yourself with the dive community in person (on dive outings, as part of a club, etc.) and online (PADI Club®, forums, other social sites, etc.). Interacting with other divers helps you keep up with the latest practices and trends.
Visit PADI Club®, padi.com and other dive websites regularly, and subscribe to dive magazines to keep up with new recommendations, new gear, the hottest dive travel destinations and the like.

Although the ideal is to dive regularly, periods of inactivity are normal. If you don’t go diving for six months or longer, it is recommended that you refresh your knowledge and skills. Your instructor can do this with the PADI ReActivate program (you can do the Knowledge Review on your tablet or online – check out ReActivate on the PADI App).
