Lesson Five: Dive Planning Software

Course Complete

We will talk about other types of gear

By the end of this section, I should be able to answer these questions:

1. What can I do with dive planning software?

2. What options do I have with dive planning software?

Dive Planning Software

A growing number of divers use computer programs or apps to help plan dives. This is common practice in technical diving, but as a recreational diver you will find two common uses.

The first is to estimate how long your air supply will last on a dive. By telling the program your air use (it’s something you learn over time, and you learn more about this in the PADI Deep Diver course), the app or software can help you estimate how long your air will last (but you still turn the dive based on your actual use and plan a reserve, of course).

Dive Planning Software

The second use of dive planning software is to estimate the time your dive computer will allow on a dive. This is based on how much nitrogen your body absorbs; you will learn more about nitrogen absorption and computer limits later in this section.

Options

You can choose dive planning software for desktop/laptop computers, though tablet apps are the most popular. Some of the software that interfaces with dive computers has a planning function (and may have an eLog function, too).

You can choose from very basic software intended only for planning recreational dives, as well as software designed for much more complex (technical) diving.

Quick quiz

1. Dive planning software can help me estimate and plan (choose all that apply)

2. I can choose from very basic software intended only for planning recreational dives, as well as software designed for much more complex diving.
