We will talk about other types of gear

By the end of this section, I should be able to answer these questions:

1. What would I use a mesh utility bag for?

2. What options can I choose from when selecting mesh utility bags?

3.Why should I be cautious about attaching a mesh utility bag to my gear while diving?

Mesh Utility Bag

Besides your gear bag, you may want one or more mesh utility bags. A mesh utility bag is a heavy-duty bag made from nylon mesh (so it drains) or other water-resistant synthetic. Think of these as all-purpose containers for bulky or hard-to-carry items. Depending upon the size, common uses include:

  • Holding litter during an underwater cleanup.

  • Carrying small accessories.

  • Transporting gear to and from the dive boat.

Style. Some bags are all mesh with a drawstring closure. Others have wire or plastic frames that allow you to hold them open with one hand and lock closed.

Material. Many mesh utility bags are entirely mesh; others have an upper portion that is solid so they last longer.

Size. Mesh bags range from hand sized to large enough to hold almost all your gear. Choose the size for the job you have in mind.

Straps or handles. Larger mesh bags, especially those intended for carrying gear, usually have handles and straps.

Be cautious about attaching a mesh utility bag to your gear while diving. In an emergency, you need to be able to quickly discard anything that may weigh you down or add a lot of drag. You also don’t want to create potential entanglement/snagging problems.

2. Mesh bags range in size and options. I would probably choose a larger one for carrying a wet exposure suit.

3. During an underwater cleanup, my buddy and I fill a large mesh utility bag with several kilograms/pounds of garbage. We should
