Lesson seven: Neutral Buoyancy

Course Complete

You will begin developing neutral buoyancy by using the fin pivot or a similar technique. This teaches you basic neutral buoyancy adjustment and how your breathing affects buoyancy.

neutral buoyancy
  • When neutrally buoyant, you should pivot upward when you inhale and downward when you exhale.

  • Be patient. Add or release air from your BCD in small amounts when adjusting for neutral buoyancy.
    • Once you can reach neutral buoyancy, start thinking in terms of neutral buoyancy as your normal state and how you primarily function in the water. This speeds up how fast your buoyancy skills become second nature.

    • Your instructor may have you use variations of the fin pivot, or a different technique entirely.
