Lesson five: Snorkel Clearing

Course Complete

Clearing your snorkel is a routine surface skill you use often during a dive, because when the snorkel is out of your mouth, it fills with water.

snorkel clearing
  • Blow the water out forcefully, like using a pea-shooter. This is called the blast method of snorkel clearing.
  • Take your first breath cautiously, and use airway control to breathe past any remaining water. If necessary, blast clear again to blow out the residual water.
  • Practice with your face submerged, which is how you would do it if you were keeping your eyes on something underwater, or in choppy conditions when, for practical purposes, your face is always in the water.
